In a new biography, pop singer and actress Selena Gomez will play the enormously popular American singer Linda Ronstadt.

Currently in pre-production, the film is being produced by James Keach, who has worked on a variety of music-related film projects including producing Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and documentaries on Ronstadt, David Crosby and Glen Campbell. The manager of Ronstadt, John Boylan, will also produce.

Gomez and Ronstadt, who are both of Mexican descent, “recently spent a few hours at Linda’s home discussing the project and getting to know each other,” according to a comment on Boylan’s website.

The movie will dramatize a subject that is maybe long overdue in pop culture: Ronstadt rose to prominence in the US music industry in the 1970s and 1980s by deftly blending folk, rock, and country music. She was also a unique female presence in a predominantly male rock milieu.

Simple Dreams and Heart Like a Wheel were two of her six consecutive platinum albums. The single You’re No Good also peaked at number one on the US chart. She was honest about the alienation she felt, saying, “They haven’t invented a word for that loneliness that everybody goes through on the road,” yet she had to fight hard to claim her place in the frequently sexist music industry.

After the success of 2020’s Rare, which topped the US album chart like its predecessors, Gomez is presently working on her fourth studio album. She will next be seen in the musical comedy drama Emilia Perez, directed by Jacques Audiard, the Frenchman behind Rust and Bone, A Prophet, and The Beat That My Heart Skipped, in addition to her ongoing part in the sitcom Only Murders in the Building.
