What is Labor Day?
Labor Day is a federal holiday in the country that’s meant to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the contributions of laborers in the development of the United States.
The holiday originated in the late 19th century when labor activists pushed for recognition for the social and economic achievements made by the American working class. States started celebrating in the 1880s, and it became a federal-level holiday in June 1894.
Why can’t I wear white after Labor Day?
“Don’t wear white after Labor Day” is a rule many have heard, but its origins are unclear.
Some speculate that the color white was associated with wealth. Those with money could wear white clothes without worrying about stains, while the laborers avoided white clothes that showed off dirt and grime from work.
Others believe the rule is just related to the weather.
Before the invention of air conditioning, clothing was the biggest way of keeping cool during the summer. White clothes helped people stay cool, and the chillier weather that began around Labor Day meant it was time to switch to darker fabrics to stay warm.
