Here’s a recap of the African Nations Championship semifinals:
In a tense African Nations Championship semifinal in Dar es Salaam, Sudan fell to Madagascar 1-0 after extra time, despite showcasing resilience and attacking intent throughout. Sudan had earned their place in the final four by topping Group D and eliminating Algeria in the quarterfinals via penalties.
During regulation time, both teams were evenly matched, with Sudan even having the upper hand offensively with a more aggressive presence in the final third with several shots on target. Captain Walieldin Khidir came agonizingly close to scoring late in the second half but blasted over the bar when the net was open.
With less than five minutes remaining, Madagascar substitute Toky Rakotondraibe netted the decisive goal in the 116th minute, sending Sudan to the third place game.
In the other semifinal, Senegal opened strong, taking the lead in the 16th minute when Joseph Layousse headed in from a Libasse Gueye corner. Morocco equalized just minutes later, however. It was a scoreless second half, followed by extra time where both sides held strong to force a penalty shootout.
Senegal’s goalkeeper Marc Diouf ultimately couldn’t prevent Morocco from clinching the win, as they fell 5–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in regulation and extra time.
