- Moss’ co-hosts on Sunday NFL Countdown celebrated his completion of treatments and called it the best news to come out of Week 1
Randy Moss was smiling ear to ear as he rang the bell to celebrate the end of his cancer treatment.
The Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, N.C. shared a video of Moss, 48, ringing the bell surrounded by the medical staff who helped treat him after he announced he needed to take time away from ESPN in December to “address a personal health challenge.”
Moss later shared in a social media post that he had been diagnosed with stage 2 bile duct cancer.
“I want to thank everybody here at this hospital for welcoming me to be a part of their family, of their extended family,” Moss said in the video after ringing the bell. “I’ve told y’all this before, but you do a great job of taking care of people, and I know it’s an emotional moment, but I thank you all. God bless you,” he told the medical staff.
On the Sunday, Sept. 7 episode of ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, Moss’ co-analysts celebrated the moment, calling it “one that we and all football fans everywhere had been waiting to see.”
Moss said it was “just a great day” when he rang the bell and gave another shout out to his doctors.
He added that after announcing he needed to step away as he received treatment, his main goal was getting back to work with ESPN.
“All my treatment is over, ringing the bell, now I’m back with the family, man,” he said as his fellow analysts agreed “there would be no better news” in the first week of the NFL season than Moss completing his treatment.

The former Minnesota Vikings star first announced that he was stepping away from ESPN in December 2024. During his hiatus, the network said Moss had their “full support” as he underwent treatments.
Shortly after, Moss opened up about his cancer diagnosis in an Instagram Live, revealing that he had undergone surgery and been hospitalized for nearly a week.
On July 1, ESPN confirmed to The Athletic that Moss would return to his role on the Sunday countdown.
“Randy’s return on Super Bowl Sunday was an emotional lift — not just for our team but for the entire football community — and knowing he will resume his full Sunday NFL Countdown schedule, beginning in Week 1, has been the highlight of the offseason,” ESPN said in the statement.
