Ralph Macchio returned to the big screen for Karate Kid: Legends, but did you know that he also fought to schedule its release at an opportune time, to make sure the movie premieres after the final season of Cobra Kai? Why, you ask? Well, he likely wanted to preserve the emotional arcs of the story, which had a build-up of around seven years.
In Karate Kid: Legends, we saw Jackie Chan and Macchio team up in the shared universe, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, here’s what the latter said about the film’s release:
I was screaming constantly every day: “This movie has to come out after the show finishes.”
So, let’s see why the timing of these two projects mattered, and how the delay was required for the story to unfold naturally.
Ralph Macchio Fought to Release Karate Kid: Legends After Cobra Kai Finale
Ralph Macchio spent over half a decade helping shape the Netflix hit, Cobra Kai. The show ran for six seasons, with 65 episodes, and introduced us to a new generation who would carry the franchise’s legacy. When Karate Kid: Legends, a full-length feature, was green-lit, the original date for its theatrical release was set to December 13, 2024.
Macchio was just wrapping up Cobra Kai when he got on a plane to Montreal to begin shooting for Legends. He was against the initial release date and did not want the movie to be released before Cobra Kai’s epic finale.
And once marketing got together and realized that [the December ‘24 release] would not benefit either, they did the right thing. Karate Kid: Legends is now coming at a time where I like to believe that Cobra Kai fans are thirsty for another chapter.
With the film’s release being rescheduled, it gave Cobra Kai the time to wrap up cleanly, without any confusion of parallel timelines. Moreover, the show’s hype attracted more fans towards the big screen because they once again wanted to experience their favorite martial arts universe.
How Ralph Macchio’s Actions Preserved the Karate Kid Franchise’s Integrity

Cobra Kai is more than just nostalgia bait! It’s a multi-generational story with several emotional payoffs. So, rushing the release of Legends, which was criticized for its storytelling and other diluted aspects, could have made people skeptical about the show’s emotional payoff and made the viewers doubtful of the franchise at large.
For Ralph Macchio, Daniel LaRusso is not just a role, but also his and the Karate Kid universe’s legacy. By timing Legends after Cobra Kai, the actor likely wanted to make sure the movie serves as a bridge in the saga, and not a break.
Most stars would blindly promote the projects they’re given, and only a few would challenge studios to delay multi-million-dollar movies. Macchio belongs in the minority because he did not intend to stroke his ego, and only wanted to ensure that both the show and the movie garner the respect they deserve.
It’s refreshing to see actors care so deeply about the audience’s experience because almost no one prioritizes heart over hype in this era. But do you think the delayed release was genuinely an effective strategy, or does it change nothing in your eyes?
You can watch Cobra Kai on Netflix. Karate Kid: Legends isn’t available for streaming yet.
