Christopher Lloyd’s Ocean-View Santa Barbara Retreat Lists for $6.4 Million

Back in 2017, after they rebuilt and subsequently sold their longtime Montecito home that had been destroyed in a 2008 wildfire, veteran TV and film actor Christopher Lloyd and his wife Lisa doled out $2.5 million for a stark contemporary residence in neighboring Santa Barbara. Though they loved the location, with its picturesque views of the Pacific, Channel Islands, local harbor, and surrounding mountains, they weren’t really feeling the house. So the couple set out to change its entire vibe, working with DesignARC, Arcadia Studio, and artist Patti Grant to transform the place into a “beautiful, private, creative, and peaceful” sanctuary.

“I wanted the landscape and the interiors to flow together, which wasn’t the case when we purchased it,” said Lisa, a former real estate agent and lifelong design enthusiast who has remodeled more than half a dozen of her own houses. “Now the home is filled with calm colors, warm wood floors, and soft, rounded edges. What was once cold and hard contemporary has become soothing, flowing, and serene.”

Fast-forward eight years, and the sleekly revamped estate has now returned to the market for nearly $6.4 million. Ron Brand and Arthur Kalayjian of Compass Montecito share the listing.

Originally built in 2006 and since extensively remodeled not once but twice, the property is anchored by a single-level abode with two bedrooms and an equal number of baths in roughly 2,300 square feet. Warm, tranquil details abound in the form of hardwood floors and Roman clay plaster walls that add depth and texture, while the primary bedroom is now adorned with custom plaster finishes, and its bath sports mitered glass walls overlooking a protected public park.

Perched on a knoll amid six acres of terraced land, within an exclusive enclave off West Mountain Drive and just a few minutes away from the shops and eateries of Montecito’s Upper and Lower villages, the white stucco structure is hidden away behind gates and lush foliage. The driveway empties out at a brick-clad motor court, with a covered entryway and steps leading to the front door.

Once inside, a small foyer flows to a sunken fireside living room boasting a soaring wood-beam ceiling dotted with large woven rattan pendant lights and sliding glass doors spilling outside. An adjacent dining area connects to the kitchen, which is outfitted with white oak cabinetry, veined-marble countertops, top-tier appliances, a breakfast bar, and an accompanying butler’s pantry.

Outdoors, the sprawling grounds are laced with bluestone hardscaping, mature olive trees, tall hedges, and numerous alfresco lounging and entertaining terraces. And just across from the main home is a two-car garage, plus a 1,165-square-foot guest cottage with a living/creative space, a bedroom, and two baths.

“This home has been a special place for us, our sanctuary,” said Lloyd, who’s most known for his iconic roles as eccentric inventor Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future movie franchise and, before that, as quirky driver Jim Ignatowski on the 1970s TV series Taxi. “Lisa and her creative team took great care in every detail, wanting to create a space that feels restorative and peaceful the moment you walk through the door.”
