HONOLULU — The University of Hawai’i women’s volleyball team broke into the win column in emphatic fashion on Friday night, sweeping past Utah Valley in the OUTRIGGER Invitational on Friday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
After four losses that included two five-set heartbreakers, the Rainbow Wahine (1-4) made it a quick night for win No. 1 on the season in a 27-25, 25-20, 25-17 victory.
UH outside hitter Stella Adeyemi turned in a career night with 17 kills in 30 attacks to hit .433 and served up two aces against the Wolverines (3-3), who had swept their first two opponents in the tournament.
Coming off a 26-kill performance against San Jose State on Thursday, freshman outside hitter Cha’lei Reid put away 15 kills while hitting .312 and also had two of UH’s eight aces. UH’s pin hitters combined for the final five points with Reid hammering three kills in a row to end the match.

Setter Adrianna Arquette distributed 34 assists while directing an offense that hit a season-high .330.
Middle blocker Bri Gunderson was in on nine of UH’s 12 blocks, including two solo, and also delivered three kills and an ace. Tyla Reese Mane also provided a spark with four kills in nine attempts, four blocks and two aces.
Sami Blackett led UVU with 12 kills and Lani Matavao and Natalie Riggs had three aces each.
UH was the aggressor from the start in jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set. UVU tied the set at 13-13 and and there were five more ties before an ace gave UVU a 20-18 lead. The ‘Bows took a 23-22 lead but UVU moved back ahead to earn set point with a block. A service error forced deuce and UH saved another set point at 25-25. Mane took a swing at an overpass and her shot was initially ruled long but the call was reversed after a review to give UH set point. Reid then landed an ace to give UH the set.
As in the first set, UH again took a 4-0 lead in the second and remained in control deep into the set. Mane delivered an ace that pushed the UH lead to 12-6 and UH maintained a cushion. The ‘Bows led 21-13 when Adeyemi hammered an overpass for her 10th kill. UVU crept back to 23-20, but Reid put away a cross-court kill and Gunderson and Arquette combined on a block to send UH into intermission with a 2-0 lead.

UVU took a 3-0 lead in the third but UH answered with an 8-1 run with Gunderson putting down back-to-back blocks. The Wolverines stayed within striking distance and cut UH’s lead to 19-17 on a solo block. After a service error, Adeyemi served the final five points of the night in the match-ending run. She landed her second ace to give the ‘Bows a 22-17 lead and Reid hammered three consecutive kills to close out the night.
The Rainbow Wahine wrap up the tournament on Sunday with a matchup against St. John’s. First serve is set for 5 p.m. UVU and San Jose State both completed the tournament at 2-1 and UH will look to join them in Sunday’s finale.
