Two cyclists have died while riding RAGBRAI this year, authorities say.The Iowa State Patrol confirms a cyclist died while on the RAGBRAI route Tuesday in Estherville. The Estherville Emergency Medical Services says it responded to an unconscious rider around 7 a.m. Tuesday. The person was taken to a nearby hospital, where they later died. The person’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.On Monday, a RAGBRAI rider died when the route crossed over into Minnesota, the Minnesota State Patrol confirmed. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says it received a 911 call that a RAGBRAI rider had collapsed on the route shortly after 8 a.m. Monday. The sheriff’s office says within seconds of the man collapsing, a doctor, a surgeon and a physician’s assistant who were all RAGBRAI participants stopped to help. The man, identified as 54-year-old Kelly Paul, of Texas, was transported by ambulance to Spirit Lake Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.“Despite receiving prompt medical attention on the scene, it is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of two RAGBRAI riders earlier this week,” said RAGBRAI Director Anne Lawrie. “Our sincere thoughts and deepest condolences to their loved ones.”This is a developing story.
